I joined Ropes & Gray in 2004 as a litigation associate in the Boston office. I left the firm temporarily in June 2005 to complete a clerkship at the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. I officially rejoined the firm in July 2006. I never had any doubt that I'd be coming back to Ropes & Gray after my clerkship -- I can't imagine a better place to work, or a better group of people with whom to work.
I was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. In 2001, I received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of San Francisco, where I was a member of the school's men's golf team. I graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2004, where I was an editor of the Harvard Law Review and an oralist for the team that won the school’s 2002 – 03 Ames Moot Court Competition.
My practice at Ropes & Gray is diverse and exciting. I have worked on cases involving false advertising and trademark violations; insurance coverage of environmental disasters, toxic torts, and violations of federal securities laws; and crimes involving the sale of regulated commodities and healthcare products. Starting with my first day at Ropes & Gray and continuing today, the partners with whom I have worked have entrusted me with an incredible amount of responsibility, and my cases collectively have exposed me to all stages of the litigation process, from the pleadings stages through certiorari review at the United States Supreme Court. I have been the lead associate on a well-publicized grand jury investigation of a leading medical device manufacturer; an important member of a small team of lawyers that represented Lloyd’s of London at a four-week trial in the Southern District of New York; a contributing or principal author of appellate briefs submitted in the Second, Third, Fifth, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits; and the principal author of a merits stage amicus submitted in one of the Supreme Court’s most important criminal cases in the October 2009 Term.
One aspect that sets Ropes & Gray's litigation practice apart is its unrivaled commitment to pro bono work, which is something I have taken advantage of to further my development as a lawyer and to give back to society. I have successfully represented an asylum applicant from Cameroon and have appeared as counsel of record before the United States Immigration Court. One of my pro bono cases — an unlawful eviction case that involved expert medical testimony — ended up going to trial in Massachusetts civil court. I also co-authored a petition for certiorari in a case involving the constitutionality of portions of the federal supervised release statute.
Although my work keeps me busy, I have had no problem sustaining a good work/life balance. In addition to spending quality time with my wife Andrea and my infant twins Owen and Elsie, I still find time to play golf on the weekends when the weather is nice.
