I’m Joe Guiliano, a partner in the Corporate Department and chair of the firm’s Corporate Intellectual Property Practice Group. I joined Ropes & Gray on January 1, 2005 as part of the combination with Fish & Neave. I’m delighted to now be a member of Ropes & Gray's Intellectual Property Group, which includes the many fine professionals who practiced intellectual property law in both firms before the combination. I enjoy working with colleagues who concentrate in other areas of the law, in an environment that fosters and encourages a "team approach" to delivering the highest quality legal services to our clients.

I started my career in patent law in 1991 when I joined Fish & Neave’s technical advisor program after completing my undergraduate studies in electrical engineering and biology and spending a few years working in the pharmaceutical industry. I am proud to be one of the early participants of the technical advisor program, which over the years has produced many outstanding associates and partners who continue to practice in our firm.

My practice can best be characterized as diverse, in that I spend roughly equal amounts of time in the areas of patent portfolio development and management, licensing and other transactions involving intellectual property, and litigation. I enjoy formulating and implementing strategies that lead to the development of patent portfolios that demand the attention of our clients’ competitors. It is particularly rewarding when we achieve a return on an investment in a patent portfolio (i.e., through licensing or enforcement) that we helped to build.

I graduated from Rutgers School of Law – Newark in 1993 and received my undergraduate degrees from Rutgers University in 1988. I enjoy boating, fishing, golfing and valiantly trying to carry on a family tradition of home winemaking (the product of which I’ve been told is "very good," but I think people are just being kind).
