I am a partner in the Corporate Department and co-head of Ropes & Gray's Intellectual Property Group. My practice focuses on the representation of companies and investors in the creation and management of intellectual property assets, including the formation, operation business, and financing of ventures built around intellectual property assets. My clients include technology companies, media organizations, branded product companies, and investors in such companies. I share the firm's goal of integrating specialized intellectual property skills into the broad skill set of a general practice environment. I believe that the firm's culture, which rewards teamwork and client service, allows each attorney to practice at skill and service levels that could not be achieved in a different, competitive environment. I believe that this environment also provides a level and quality of engagement with clients and colleagues that ensures a stimulating and supportive workplace.
Recent matters on which I have worked include representation of a Fortune 500 branded products company in their acquisition of naming rights in an NFL Football stadium; representing private equity investors in connection with the acquisition of a major telecommunications services provider; forming and funding a start-up technology company built around the application of computer vision technology to biotechnology research; representing one of the world's leading museums in the acquisition and management of rights in art and other collected objects; representing a leading bank in connection with its creation of a web-based market for trading specialized securities; representing regional advertising agencies in a roll-up merger; and representation of a leading publisher of educational textbooks and web sites. I also act as an intellectual property specialist supporting transactions led by the firm's other practice groups.
I am married to a Professor of Cultural Anthropology at a Boston area university and have two daughters. I enjoy coaching my daughters' basketball teams, acting as Treasurer of the local Girl Scout troop, and insisting that my children join me for gourmet meals when they would rather eat macaroni and cheese. I also enjoy open-water swimming, racquet sports, and going to movies (not films) where I always order popcorn.
I graduated from Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law in 1989 and subsequently served as Law Clerk to the Honorable D. Lowell Jensen of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Before joining Ropes & Gray in 1999, I practiced as an associate, and then partner, of other firms in San Francisco and Boston.
