I am Cary Armistead, a partner in the Corporate Department of Ropes & Gray, currently serving as Chair of the Department, Co-Head of the firm’s International Practice Group and Co-Head of the firm's Antitrust Practice Group.
My practice is eclectic. It centers on U.S. antitrust and European competition law matters but includes the broad range of legal issues affecting the international operations of high technology, branded consumer products and other multinational corporations. I advise clients on the antitrust implications of mergers, acquisitions and joint venture transactions and help guide them through the pre-transaction review processes of the European Union and other jurisdictions as well as the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act pre-merger notification process in the United States. I also counsel clients in connection with antitrust, intellectual property and commercial issues arising from the pricing, distribution and licensing of their products and services in both domestic and international contexts.
Although my practice tends to center on technology and branded consumer products companies, I have the pleasure of working with domestic and international clients in a wide variety of industries, ranging from financial services, forest products and pharmaceuticals to electronic publishing and bio-medical research. So, in the morning I might be analyzing the competitive impact of a merger between two microprocessor design companies and in the afternoon helping to negotiate an agreement for the propagation and distribution of genetically engineered mice.
My professional history is nearly as diverse as my practice. After receiving a B.A. in Economics from Michigan State University and a J.D., cum laude, from Columbia, I joined the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. under its Honors Graduate program and served for three years as a Trial Attorney in the Antitrust Division. Following government service, I practiced law with firms in Washington, D.C. and Boston. Before joining Ropes & Gray in 1996, I was a Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of Digital Equipment Corporation, a large computer manufacturer and information services provider.
In addition to practicing law, I am a frequent lecturer and panelist on CLE programs on antitrust, international and technology law issues. An avid reader (mostly non-fiction), I also enjoy skiing in the winter and golf whenever the weather and time permit.
