I joined Ropes & Gray in 1991 following a clerkship with Judge Tauro of the federal district court in Boston, and became a partner in the Litigation Department in 1999. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1984 and from Cornell Law School in 1990, where I was Senior Editor of the Cornell Law Review. Prior to attending law school, I taught history and coached basketball and tennis on the high school level.

Since joining Ropes & Gray, I have had a varied and national practice. Soon after joining the firm, I worked on a number of dealer termination matters for Ben & Jerry's, and was a member of the team that represented Judge Nixon before the Supreme Court in his challenge to the procedures that the Senate used in his impeachment trial. In the last few years, I have had several trials and arbitrations, including two employment discrimination cases, one for Gillette in federal court and the other for Harvard in state court, an arbitration for Harry Winston, Inc. in a dispute with Bruce Winston over the terms of the lease of the Company's flagship store on Fifth Avenue, and an arbitration in Chicago over an exclusive license agreement for cutting-edge technology to improve the appearance of cellulite. A large part of my practice is devoted to representing private equity clients and their portfolio companies. I enjoy working on these cases, which gives me a diverse set of clients and the opportunity to work closely with my colleagues in other departments of the firm. Recent successes include successfully defending a counterterrorist expert in a well-publicized defamation case brought by the Islamic Society of Boston, and securing dismissal of class action claims brought by individual banks against TJX in federal court arising out of the criminal intrusion into TJX's computer network.

Outside of work, my wife Peggy and I have two boys, ages 13 and 11. In addition to spending time with my family, my other interests include traveling, theater, sailing, and antiques.
