I am a litigation partner in the New York office of Ropes & Gray. The primary focus of my practice is on securities enforcement and white collar criminal defense. On the securities enforcement side, my clients are financial institutions like investment advisors, broker dealers and hedge funds. I represent them in investigations and actions by securities regulators like the Securities and Exchange Commission and law enforcement agencies like the New York Attorney General. On the white collar side, I represent corporations and individuals who have been investigated or indicted for financial crimes. I have always found these types of government enforcement cases to be fascinating in that they involve sophisticated legal issues, high stakes and opportunity to deal directly with top regulators. A sampling of my cases includes: representing a New York Stock Exchange floor-broker in connection with criminal claims alleging that he improperly used a personal account to trade from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange; representing the CEO of an insurance company in a criminal action in which the government alleged that the CEO had fabricated the trading performance figures he used to launch an initial public offering of the insurance company; and, representing the president of an investment advisor in connection with civil and criminal claims that the advisor was running a Ponzi scheme with investor funds.
I am also involved in a financial industry group known as 100 Women in Hedge Funds. 100 Women in Hedge Funds is a world-wide organization of women who are associated with the hedge fund industry as traders, compliance personnel, analysts and other hedge fund professionals. The focus of the organization is to provide its members with: (i) education on sophisticated industry topics; (ii) net-working opportunities within the industry; and (iii) a vehicle for directed philanthropy. I participate in all aspects of the organization, but much of my work with the group is through its philanthropy committee, the group that identifies and works with the charities who are ultimately chosen to receive funding from the 100 Women organization.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thereafter, I received a B.A., summa cum laude, in economics from Boston College in 1988 and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center in 1991. While at Boston College, I played Division 1 soccer. I have also lived in France, studying in Cannes and Paris and working in Strasbourg.
